July 1, 2024 – Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) recently hosted an enlightening International Seminar on Mushroom Farming, unveiling cutting-edge insights and innovations in the field. As part of the Phil-Span Friendship Day Celebration, President Reyes welcomed a distinguished guest from Spain, whom he mentored in mushroom cultivation and now heads their own production company.

The seminar, organized by ASCOT’s School of Agriculture, Research and Development Office, and International Affairs Office, drew participants from across the country. Dr. Ma. Luz F. Cabatan, Vice President for Academic Affairs and concurrent Dean of the School of Agriculture, delivered opening remarks to both in-person and virtual attendees.

President Renato G. Reyes, serving as a keynote speaker, explored the intricate world of mushroom organisms, crops, and functional foods. He discussed pivotal growth factors, optimal production techniques, and emphasized the importance of research-driven technologies. “Our challenge today lies not just in cultivating mushrooms but also in scaling production,” President Reyes highlighted, urging interdisciplinary collaboration and government support.

Engr. Victor Sala, CEO of Mycosphere, Inc., shared insights on “Unmasking the Business Potential of Mushrooms,” detailing advancements in spawn production and storage techniques. He showcased diverse mushroom varieties and their commercial applications, sparking discussions on business opportunities in the sector.

The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, fostering dialogue and knowledge exchange among experts and participants. ASCOT plans to continue this educational journey with practical demonstrations on mushroom tissue culture, offering hands-on insights into advanced cultivation methods.
