The groundbreaking research “Synergistic Cytotoxicity of Philippine Edible Mushrooms Ganoderma lucidum and Oudemansiella canarii on Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Cells” has earned the Best Scientific Poster Award at the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Annual Scientific Meeting, held at the Manila Hotel on July 10-11, 2024.
This pioneering study, the first of its kind in the Philippines, demonstrates the powerful anticancer properties of two native edible mushrooms. The research reveals significant effects in killing leukemia cells when using Ganoderma lucidum and Oudemansiella canarii together.
The winning paper is a collaboration among esteemed experts: ASCOT President Dr. Renato Reyes, a renowned mushroom researcher and scientist; Dr. Rich Milton Dulay and Dr. Sofronio Kalaw from Central Luzon State University (CLSU); Dr. Esperanza Cabrera from De La Salle University – Manila (DLSU); and Dr. Benigno Valdez from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA.
In his remarks, ASCOT President Renato G. Reyes emphasized the significance of research and collaboration in achieving scientific breakthroughs:
“Through the power of collaboration, we can join together to create scientific breakthroughs. This research would not have been possible without the support of our partners. Every partner has their own responsibilities. The common denominator is to discover new findings that may result in research breakthroughs to best serve the people as we generate new knowledge. What I want to emphasize is the importance of partnership to accomplish new things. Through collaboration, we discovered new strains of Ganoderma and a newly reported domesticated species of Oudemansiella. These findings are new to the Philippines in the sense that this information can be used as an anti-cancer treatment, particularly for leukemia. Without our partner from the U.S., we would not have established its bi-functional activities. Here in the Philippines, we have very rich genetic resources that are yet to be discovered. But through collaboration, we can uncover new findings from these genetic resources.”
This research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), aiming to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages by exploring new treatments for diseases like leukemia.
